Meldrum and Bourtie Community Council:

The community council (click here for list of committee members and their contact details) is an essential link between the people of Oldmeldrum and Bourtie with Aberdeenshire council. It is a statutory body recognised in law but currently with little formal responsibilities.

Meldrum and Bourtie Community Council (MBCC) is one of the more active and contributory Community Councils (CC) in the area. As well as the areas of Oldmeldrum and Bourtie, they are also looking after the interests of Daviot and the surrounding area. In fact with changes due shortly to all CC's in Aberdeenshire, Meldrum and Bourtie will look after most of Ward 33 (Meldrum) as defined by the Boundary Commission for the Aberdeenshire Council. They currently comprise of a minimum of fifteen members who are taken from three areas. The town of Oldmeldrum a minimum of six, the old parish of Meldrum a minimum of three, the parish of Bourtie a minimum of three. Members from Daviot will be formally added shortly.

At their monthly meetings they look at any problems in the area and discuss what there contributions to solving the problems could be. It may be to report the problem brought up by a council member or a member of the public. After deliberation the matter may be reported to Aberdeenshire Council for action. It may be responding to a document issued by Aberdeenshire Council for comment. Consultation by many relevant bodies including the Council are becoming a more and more important role of the CC and take up a fair bit of their time. The CC is now a statutory consultee for all Planning Applications and this can be a hot spot at any meeting. After looking at the applications, they can submit letters of support or objection to planning applications. Such letters will be considered by the Area Committee when the applications come up before them at their monthly meeting.

Attending each monthly meeting will be representatives of the Daviot Community Association. This recently formed body came out of the Steering Group set up a year or so ago as a result of the pending development of the House Of Daviot together with a number of other issues. Plans are afoot for the CC to include the Daviot area with 3 representative on the MBCC.

Why not go along to see what goes on? They are always looking for more members.
The community council meets every month, usually in the lower room in the town hall and is open to all to attend. Watch the local press for details.
